Welcome all to my very first guest post! First of all I cannot wait to have Jolene here with us taking about "Flawed Characters." But first, we've got to get to know about the lady who we are here to see and her novel Night Sky...

At the Other End:

After losing Sarah, the friend he’s loved, to some other guy, Jameson meets Sky. Her Native American roots, fluid movements, and need for brutal honesty become addictive fast. This is good. Jameson needs distraction – his dad leaves for another woman, his mom’s walking around like a zombie, and Sarah’s new boyfriend can’t keep his hands off of her.

As he spends time with Sky and learns about her village, her totems, and her friends with drums - she's way more than distraction. Jameson's falling for her fast.

But Sky’s need for honesty somehow doesn’t extend to her life story – and Jameson just may need more than his new girl to keep him distracted from the disaster of his senior year.

Author Bio...

Jolene grew up in Wasilla, Alaska. She graduated from Southern Utah University with a degree in political science and French, which she used to teach math to middle schoolers.

After living in Washington, Utah and Las Vegas, she now resides in Alaska with her husband, and two children. Aside from writing, Jolene sews, plays the guitar, sings when forced, and spends as much time outside as possible.

She is also the author of The Next Door Boys and the upcoming Knee

Flawed Characters

A book to me isn't real unless the characters are imperfect.

But it's HARD to make my people flawed. I love them. I want them to always make smart decisions, but they can't. There would be no story.

While writing Night Sky, I really had to dig deep because I was determined to make Jameson a nice guy. The thing is, all high-school guys (or almost all, because there MIGHT be an exception) look forward to being with someone. Touching them. Getting closer. So, Jameson was a nice guy, but he did think about that a lot.

Sky was flawed in that she was simply afraid to trust. She enjoyed having the upper hand in her relationship with Jameson, but was also afraid. She just hid it well. As the reader, we see a few clues, and it was so hard for me to know what she was doing, as she was doing it.

Sarah's flaw was simply one of being a tad self-centered (totally normal) and a bit clueless. But she was nice, and always wanted to do the right thing. It just doesn't mean that she always did.

There's also always a fine line between writing characters with flaws, and characters we don't have sympathy for, which, in my opinion, kills a book for me faster than almost anything else.

I also think, in the end, it is very often a character's flaws that make them more endearing, more relatable. Because I'm far from perfect, and it's nice to see happy endings come to people as imperfect as me.
